Glossary

Every term we use in our rankings, reports and firm pages, in one place. For how it all fits together, see How we rank.

How a post scores

Power points are the unit of everything we rank. A post earns points for what people do with it, not for how many people see it.

  • Public score: what we collect from public LinkedIn. Reactions + reposts + 4 × comments, post by post.
  • Submitted score: your own LinkedIn analytics for the quarter, read from your screenshots and weighted as above. It comes as a quarter total, not post by post.
  • Power score: your ranking score. Whichever is higher, public or submitted. Submitting never lowers anyone.
  • Score source: whether a person's power score came from public or submitted data.
  • Firm page posts score reactions + 4 × comments. Reposts of a page's posts don't count towards the page.
  • Original post: something a person wrote and posted themselves. Reposts of other people's content and posts in LinkedIn groups never count.
  • Sensitive posts (death notices, tributes, news of serious illness) count in every score, firm page scores included. We never show them anywhere, on a person's profile or a firm's.

Why we score actions, not views: a reaction takes a second, a comment takes thought, and a save or a send means the post was worth keeping or passing on. Impressions only tell you how far a post travelled, so we don't score or show them.

The 10x10 family

Every 10x10 uses public scores only, because submitted analytics don't break down post by post. All of them reward quality, not volume: nobody wins one by posting ten times a day.

TermWhat it isMax posts
10x10One person's ten best posts in the quarter, added up10
Firm page 10x10A firm's LinkedIn company page, its ten best posts10
Firm 10x10A firm's ten best people (leaders excluded), their ten best posts each100
10x10x10x10Firm page 10x10 + firm 10x10 + the 10x10s of the firm's two best leaders. Our headline firm ranking130
Ultimate 10x10The quarter's ten best posts, one per author, from every list. Firm pages excluded10
Firm ultimate 10x10The ten best posts at one firm, one per author, the firm page counting as one author10
Deep benchThe firm 10x10 re-run without the firm's top person, the 11th stepping up100
  • Inside the 10x10x10x10: the two leaders sit on top of the ten people. A leader who ranks in the firm's top ten moves to the leaders layer, and the 11th-best person steps up. Nobody counts twice. A firm with fewer than ten posters or two leaders scores what it has.
  • Posts it took: how many posts make up a 10x10. Below ten means the person posted fewer than ten times.
  • % from top 10 posts: a person's 10x10 as a share of their whole quarter. High means a few posts did the work.

The lists

Everyone sits on one list only. Each list is ranked by power score, and each publishes its own 10x10 table too.

  • Out: people at overseas-headquartered firms, unregulated businesses and patent attorney firms; former lawyers now doing something else; future trainees not yet employed.
  • Firm on the last day: someone who moves firm mid-quarter counts, with all their posts, for the firm they're at on the quarter's last day.

Firm measures

TermWhat it is
Page scoreEvery original post on a firm's own LinkedIn page in the quarter, added up. Rewards scale
Combined powerEvery original post from the page, the people and the leaders, added up. Rewards scale, where the 10x10x10x10 rewards quality
Power per postA page's power points divided by its posts
Social armyThe firm's people who post each month: the number, and the % of its LinkedIn headcount
Brand ambassadorsThe firm's people who repost the firm's own content
Share of voiceA firm's slice of the reactions and comments earned across a group of firms
People v pageHow many reactions and comments the firm's people earn for every one its page earns
Per 1,000 staffA figure divided by the firm's LinkedIn headcount, so a 200-person firm compares fairly with a 2,000-person one. "Size for size" in our commentary
Middle firmThe median: half the group sits above it, half below
No comment postsPosts that drew no comments at all, as a % of a page's posts
Jab or hookA post with no link (a jab: builds attention) against one with a link (a hook: asks for the click). A choice, not a penalty
Rising starsPeople who climbed most between last quarter and this
Biggest risersFirms whose score rose most, in %, compared within size groups (1–50, 51–100, 101–250)

We don't put a pound value on the attention a post earns.

House rules

  • The quarter: calendar quarters, e.g. Q3 = 1 July to 30 September. The day after it ends, we refresh every post from its final fortnight so late reactions count.
  • Freeze: the night we lock a quarter's scores.
  • Free to enter: anyone can put themselves forward. Nobody pays to be ranked, and buying anything has no effect on any ranking.
  • Who we name: our reports name everyone we rank. On this site, a person's profile page and named ranking go live only with their permission; sending us your analytics for the quarter counts. Firm leaders are named without asking. Everyone else appears in the site's tables in their true position, unnamed.
  • Lists only grow: a late correction never pushes anyone off a published list. The list gets longer instead.
  • Praise by name, never criticise by name. No fallers tables, and nobody held up as a bad example.
  • Hall of Famers still count for their firms in every firm measure.
  • Our firm names: we keep our own short names (Fletchers, not Fletchers Solicitors).
  • Archive: the current quarter is free. Past quarters move into a paid archive at each launch.
