Q1 2025 Q&A
When did you decide to start to use LinkedIn to share posts and why?
I first signed up for LinkedIn in 2011 but only really started posting in 2020. I qualified as a solicitor in December 2019 and a few months later the pandemic hit.
I decided to use LinkedIn as a way of networking and connecting with others during this time, as I was unable to go out and meet people physically.
Did you have any fears about being authentic and sharing your opinions in your posts at first?
Yes at first I just posted about legal items but as the years went on, I wanted to show my personality in my posts and moved to also posting things about me and my hobbies. I then took posting to a different stage and posted items which have some humor but also linking them back to the legal profession and now this is the route I like to take. Making the law interesting and engaging is the aim with my posts.
Why do you think your posts encourage your followers to comment and engage?
I try and make my posts relatable and current to things at that time. This then gives people an opportunity to comment about their experiences and how they feel about a certain topic.
Has your firm been supportive of what you’re doing and - assuming it has - what lessons could others learn from your approach?
Yes, my current firm Aquabridge have been very supportive and they can see the positive nature that posting on social media has for the firm.
It allows us to showcase what we can do and also gives the solicitors a face and a voice, which people can see that we are human beings and not just someone on the end of a phone or email.
Do clients ever say anything about your posts to you?
I receive many messages from clients saying they like my posts and have picked up tips for their businesses from them.
Many of my current clients have come from this platform and its great to support them on LinkedIn too and they support me.
Has your success on LinkedIn inspired other colleagues to start using the platform?
Yes a few of my colleagues now post on LinkedIn and we discuss ways to collaborate and showcase what we can do as individuals and as a firm.
What would you say to others that are thinking of adding their voice on this platform?
Go for it!
Like anything in life some people may not like your content but others will love it and as long as you show up for them, then it can be such a great tool to have.
What’s the most surprising result that you’ve produced due to your posting on LinkedIn? Or, have you had any breakthrough results?
The volume of clients that I have obtained from the platform is the more surprising result for me.
It is great to work with such brilliant people and our relationship started on this platform.
Have you found real life networking easier as a result of your profile on LinkedIn?
Yes, when I visit networking events I recognise so any more people through my interactions with them on LinkedIn and its nice to have that initial ice broken at an event as you already have some sort of understanding of their business and them as a person.
Which creators would other legal sector professionals be wise to follow?
Henry Nelson Case is a great person to follow, his videos are funny but they have a good message and we can learn alot from them.
Colin Horton, he is not a solicitor but he is a surveyor who posts great content and it always has a positive spin on the professional world.
