Q1 2025 Q&A
When did you decide to start to use LinkedIn to share posts and why?
I joined LinkedIn about 12 or 13 years ago – I used to use Twitter quite a bit, then got more into Facebook to connect with friends, especially during the Covid lockdowns, and increased my use of LinkedIn gradually over the past 6 or 7 years.
I tend to use LinkedIn for a mix of stuff: some work related, some personal – I'm not too keen on the "look at me!" or "aren’t I clever!" stuff, but sometimes I join in.
I find LinkedIn can be a bit pompous – I try adding a touch of humour when I can to posts; LinkedIn, in particular, can otherwise be so dry..
Did you have any fears about being authentic and sharing your opinions in your posts at first?
I think I've always been myself on LinkedIn and other social media - I'd hope that anyone who met me in real life after reading my posts would know it's the same person (and not an AI bot!)
Why do you think your posts encourage your followers to comment and engage?
I find the posts that get the most engagement are the ones that are the most personal; the ones that simply link to an article that I or someone in my team has written tend to get the least traction – but I don’t just post for the likes!
Has your firm been supportive of what you’re doing and - assuming it has - what lessons could others learn from your approach?
I think being authentic, trying to say something interesting, not taking oneself too seriously, being reasonably consistent, not getting into online spats – I think if your firm tried to stop you if you took that approach, it would be a pretty miserable firm!
Do clients ever say anything about your posts to you?
Yes – often. I don’t think anyone has commented adversely.
Has your success on LinkedIn inspired other colleagues to start using the platform?
I have a few colleagues who use LinkedIn to get their message out there; I know from feedback that lots of people do see my posts, and I hope that some of them feel they could have a voice if they wanted one.
What would you say to others that are thinking of adding their voice on this platform?
Go for it! (At worst, you get to get it off your chest, and no-one will notice….)
What’s the most surprising result that you’ve produced due to your posting on LinkedIn? Or, have you had any breakthrough results?
I have been acting, pro bono, with Adam Wagner KC, for the British and closely connected hostages held by Hamas in Gaza; we have both had very positive feedback to our posts about this work, which has been really encouraging, and pushed us to do more and encouraged others to take steps too.
Have you found real life networking easier as a result of your profile on LinkedIn?
I think so – people who I don’t know in the real world seem to know me from my posts – it has been the start to many interesting chats!
Which creators would other legal sector professionals be wise to follow?
I'd really urge people to follow themselves – how you write, what you write, what you comment on, what you share – it's up to you!
